....Deeply unnerving as I would hope it would be for the way the sinewy visceral electronics and tones THE DIELECTRIC uses enter the bloodstream and attack the nervous system direct.......

BIBA KOPF / THE WIRE

.....Experimental, noisy and with a barbed sense of melody, a description of Massive Attack meets Einsturzende Neubauten and Coil might give the best indication of where THE DIELECTRIC lie: urgent, ambient industrial music that’s not afraid to embrace mood and texture. With a previous reluctance to appear in videos and a fondness for mysterious shadowy photo shoots hasn't helped raise their profile outside the electronic underground in the UK and Europe, but judging by this trilogy release this is sure to change very soon...

" FLICKER OF AN EYE VOL-2

...Marking a transition from the cinematic and nightmarish, off-beat noisescapes of the first eponymous EP . 'FLICKER OF AN EYE ' voyages further into a darker , more atmospheric, industrial, downtempo-electro-dub direction for this second installment from THE DIELECTRIC's trilogy series RAPID-EYE ASSEMBLAGE. Featuring the groups mellifluously 'moody 'n' edgy ' freeform signature with abstract, musical-noise settings. 'FLICKER OF AN EYE ' represents a more crossover, electronic soundclash of instrumentation and vocals. " RAPID-EYE ASSEMBLAGE VOL-1

....THE DIELECTRIC announce the forthcoming series of EP's due to be released in 2008-2009.The focus and motivation behind this trilogy project dreamed-up by founder member J.HOOKENS ( formerly of JERICO ONE / B3B ) is to experiment and explore new sound and conceptual music-art ideas outside the standard band-format and to work with a rotating line-up of new and established artists on the international music-art scene. The first part of the series is entitled ' RAPID-EYE ASSEMBLAGE' ( EP ) VOL-1 conceived between London, Manchester,Berlin and Japan in late December 2006 and October 2007 and marks the beginning of a darkly-beautiful and atmospheric journey undertaken by ( The Dielectric ) to produce and create what can only be best described as a thunderous cacophony of intense melody meets pulsing nightmare soundscapes with an avant-garde mix of edgy, abrasive skull-snapping beats and sub-bass dubtronics'RAPID-EYE ASSEMBLAGE' documents THE DIELECTRIC’S first original compositions/ demos recorded by J.HOOKENS Together with established underground Berlin vocalist and multi-instrumentalist MONA MUR , best known for her collaborations with FM Einheit, Marc Chung and Alex Hacke of EINSTURZENDE NEUBAUTEN and En Esch formerly KMFDM , Dieter Meier of YELLO and the Warsaw Philharmonic to name but a few, who contributes her vocals / lyrics and sound ideas to the tracks 'Operative' and 'Shadowless co-written and produced with Hookens . The EP also includes the Japanese underground writer and webcaster KENJI SIRATORI who approached THE DIELECTRIC to create a dark-tapestry of sound for his spoken-word composition 'Asylum' with music-backing courtesy of Hookens plus London based artist-contributor and sound engineer/ producer D.ESCOTT Aka AWAX who co-wrote the track 'Mechanisms' with Hookens. THE DIELECTRIC | PRESS REVIEWS 2008 - 2009

" RAPID-EYE VOLUME-3 ( PRESS REVIEWS )

...THE DIELECTRIC strikes back with the last chapter of their "Rapid-Eye Assemblage"-trilogy. This English project features J. Hookens better known as Jerico One (but we now have to say ex-JERICO ONE>)! According to me Jerico One remains one of the refreshing and efficient progressive electronic projects I heard in years. This "Rapid Eye"-maxi from THE DIELECTRIC brings us a bit back into the genius arrangements and electro-atmospheres of JERICO ONE>. J. Hookens got some real good company to compose this release. He invited several guest musicians and among the list you'll find ANN-MARI THIM (Arcana) and KAREN KING (Killing Ophelia) both as vocalists. A few more guests contributed to the music and I here refer to VLADISLAV BUBEN, D.ESCOTT (Awax) and MICHAEL PFIRRMANN (Odradek).

The opening piece "Corridors" is a great start. I am here especially impressed by the vocal production. A kind of half spoken half sung vocals have been produced in a sort of ghost-like treatment, which fits remarkably with the icy electronics. The splendor of the writing explodes on the next track entitled "Flight" featuring Ann-Mari Thim for the female vocal parts. This song is more into heavy rhythms and reminds a bit to the industrial power of Neikka RPM. The most fascinating experience on this song is the mix of this heavy, but refreshing kind of electronic music and the vocals of the Arcana singer. This sounds a bit like a meeting point between opposites, but the result is outstanding.

"Directiv" (again with Ann-Mari Thim on vocals) is quite different. This song is quieter and more into floating vibes. "Exteria" coming next is again heavier. This is an instrumental track with some kind of breakbeats. The last song entitled "Lucid" features Karen King as female vocalist. This track is a new exploration from the icy sound bank of J. Hookens. It's a sort of spooky electronic music revealing a complex rhythmic and deep bass lines. I can only encourage this project to compose an entire album in a linear musical vein as this maxi! It's simply impressive!(DP:8/9) Deranged Psyche

..Slightly disorienting but memorably good new EP release from this perennially underrated arty music collective via Manchester, London,Berlin,.Hugeness of sound has always been their thing, as this final part of the trilogy series demonstrates, collecting five of THE DIELECTRIC's best moments to date. Featuring some exquisite vocals and lyrics courtesy of leader J.Hookens with the German artist ODRADEK and the Swedish singer ANN-MARI THIM ( from the acclaimed band ARCANA ).THE DIELECTRIC manage to integratemelodic sensitivity with ever changing rhythms, sounds and noise. Yet for all the rhythmic ingenuity and wide-screen production , THE DIELECTRIC's music is never purely moody, industrial or ambient: there's always some emotional vocal hook or groove to pull the listner in .This is experimental crossover electronica of the highest order, whose appeal is not confined to a specialist audience.

..Third part of this ongoing trilogy series for THE DIELECTRIC, J. Hookens’ follow-up project after JERICO ONE. This third and final EP continues with the already discovered path, which he has presented with the predecessor ”Flicker Of An Eye”. Musically offering a wide-ranging style by integrating extracts out of Electro, Industrial, Ambient and modern IDM/Electronica, THE DIELECTRIC impresses once again with the choice of multiple guest musicians. Each of the presented 5 tracks has its own story behind, be additional help on the production, or be it recorded at different places. The opener ”Corridors” pleases with extra-ordinary percussion inserts and German vocals courtesy of ( ODRADEK ) thrown in the mix. For the tracks ”Flight” and ”Directiv” J. Hookens has added the Swedish singer Ann-Mari Thim (ARCANA) to perform the female counterparts.

The Belarussian Avantgardist Vladislav Buben has provided some additional instruments and has co-written the tracks ”Exteria” and ”Lucid”. Especially the all instrumental tune ”Exteria” convinces with some noisy synth lines, it seems that V. Buben’s hand-writing shimmers through. Compared to the above named predecessor, this third chapter of the ”Rapid-Eye Assemblage” series seems to be more upbeat, while the percussion work of Hookens is still the outstanding factor in the production process of THE DIELECTRIC. What astonishes me a bit, is the fact, that this release comes out in different formats. There's also available a strictly limited 7” vinyl single, which can be purchased only and directly from THE DIELECTRIC website – if it hasn't been sold out yet.

..Rapid-Eye’ continues with its more experimental electro-industrial approach, which is aided with lots of break-beat elements. There are also some guest appearances working on this 5-track EP, like the Swedish Ann-Mari Thim, known from Arcana, who gives powerful backing vocals on a couple of tracks; ‘Directiv’ and ‘Flight’. ‘Corridors’ sounds very cyberpunk with lots of break-beats. It also uses effective vocals to deliver a striking sound. ‘Flight’, as said, uses the vocals of Ann-Mari Thim. It has a very urgent and powerful sound to it. ‘Directiv’ uses some nice percussion elements and has a kind of Middle-Eastern, fantasy atmosphere. ‘Exteria’ has a very dynamic sound, full of break-beats again. The EP closes with ‘Lucid’, which has a more experimental structure and has a great atmosphere to it.

Third time's a charm, like the saying goes. And it definitely is appropriate here. The whole EP has again a very striking and original sound. It sometimes reminds me of the cyberpunk aesthetics of Front Line Assembly, with pinches of Haujobb. The question will finally be; will the album live up to all these EP’s? Time will tell, but ‘Rapid-Eye’ is again material for in the collection of any more adventurous electro-industrial fan.

..This third EP in The Dielectric's Rapid-Eye Assemblage trilogy makes good on J. Hookens' ever expanding forays into his inimitable style of underground electronica, wrought with frenetic breaks and deep atmospheres. While apparently not actually released on his URBCOM label, as is typical of virtually every one of HOOKENS' releases, Rapid-Eye Vol-3 treads the fine line between experimental impulse and dance floor frenzy, as proven on a track like "Flight" in which simple breakbeats and subsonic bass rolls standard to the dubstep genre are augmented by the wax and wane of a piercing electronic sting and the ghostly reverberations of a female voice beneath a dark spoken word. The same can be said of "Corridors" as flutters of distorted and cavernous synths give way to eerie spoken words and whispers that sound as hollow as the ambient echoes that fill the track. Once again, the breaks and rubbery bass lines enter, but with a subtle sparseness to keep from dominating the mix and allowing the drear and dread send the listener into a dreamlike state where the urge to get up and dance is offset by dark psychedelia.

As on his previous outlet, Jerico One>, HOOKENS infuses THE DIELECTRIC with an urban quality that allows the music to play the role of soundtrack to the hidden nightlife, the dimly lit alleys and cul-de-sacs that remain clouded in the peripheral vision. The hints of melodies on "Flight" and on "Lucid" offer a sense of familiarity to the otherwise alien sonic landscapes, such as the vaguely tribal percussion that underscores "Directiv" or the menacingly tense backdrops of "Lucid," as if Dead Can Dance went breakcore. It is these melodies that also help to give The Dielectric an enticing edge that will surely lure the listener into the decayed cityscapes presented on the Rapid-Eye series.

Even a high impact track like "Exteria," filled to the brim with punching synth bass and pummeling beats that threaten to drill their way into your psyche, retain a dreamy quality of drear and dread so befitting the big city by night. With a host of collaborators as diverse as ODRADEK, D.ESCOTT, VLADISLAV BUBEN, ANN-MARI THIM , KAREN KING , HOOKENS concludes THE DIELECTRIC's's Rapid-Eye Assemblage trilogy with more of his trademark juxtaposition of the accessible with the experimental, almost daring listeners to take that long dark ride into his dark musical fantasy world. As with the previous entries in the series, the downside to this EP is the brevity of the tracks, with the longest track only barely exceeding four-and-a-half minutes; while this does well to hold the audience in a nervous state of anticipation, the payoff is less than satisfying. Be that as it may, one can only hope that HOOKENS will take THE DIELECTRIC further into uncharted territory and offer up a wider range of electro flavors and percussive frenzy in the foreseeable future.

" FLICKER OF AN EYE " ( PRESS REVIEWS )

..Tension is a vital component to the sound of THE DIELECTRIC . Every track featured on this 5-track download has a sense of drama and urgency about them, even the laidback instrumental opener "introjection" with it's industrial-ambient dub sounds slowly ascending to create a rather beautiful but intense music landscape .The second track 'dimensions,' being a particular highpoint, twists and turns into a more atmospheric beat-driven sprawl of sounds'n'beats. Featuring the lead vocals of THE DIELECTRIC 's main music director and chief stratagist J.Hookens ( the man behind the URBCOM production label and former member of industrial London electro-punk renegade JERICO ONE> ) "Dimensions" Upps the tempo with sharp irregular outbursts of abrasive-noise samples played behind a dark enigmatic big-beat groove. The Other tracks to recommend on this digital-only release would include the tracks "Excursion" and "Re:location" for its seductive and sinister soundtrack backing minus the monotone ranting's of Japanese poet Kenji Siratori who guests on the track but sounds exactly the same as he always does.

Experimental, noisy and with a barbed sense of melody, a description of Massive Attack meets Einsturzende Neubauten and Coil might give the best indication of where The Dielectric lie: urgent, ambient industrial music that’s not afraid to embrace mood and texture. With a previous reluctance to appear in videos and a fondness for mysterious shadowy photo shoots hasn't helped raise their profile outside the electronic underground in the UK and Berlin, but judging by this second ep release 'Flicker Of An Eye' may change this very soon.

.J. Hookens has been a busy man indeed; as the head of UK underground label Urbcom, he's built up a small but powerful catalog of some of the edgiest and most diverse electronica one could ask for. Incorporating all styles from dubstep to breakcore to good old-fashioned EBM, Urbcom is perhaps the modern electro scene's best kept secret, steadily working its way to the masses one release at a time. After disbanding his JERICO ONE> project in 2007 , Hookens plunged himself headfirst into THE DIELECTRIC, a new outlet featuring a rotating cast of several different established and emerging new collaborators.

On Flicker of an Eye, the group's second EP, Hookens takes his cinematic soundscapes and noisy beat-driven electronica down even more mysterious paths than he ever dared to tread with Jerico One>. "Dimensions" perhaps best exemplifies THE DIELECTRIC's sound as a steady EBM-ish breakbeat in tandem with a simple but edgy synth bass line gives way to an atmospheric array of static electronics shooting past the listener's ears, like driving through the city at night, the flashes of lights and the bustle of urban squalor here and gone "In the Flicker of an Eye." Karen King's vocals add a ghostly quality to the already sparse arrangements of "Belief," where the pops of a slight bass refrain underscore a tapestry of electronic noise, each sample - be it a catchy breakbeat, a screeching of static noise, or an emotive string loop - appearing and disappearing into the mix, giving the track all the eeriness of a Throbbing Gristle track, though slightly less caustic and somewhat more melodic.

Also notable is the closing track, "Re:Location," on which Japanese cyberpunk writer Kenji Siratori makes one of his distinguished appearances, his rousing voice spouting out another one of his renowned poems, as always, recited in his native Japanese, backed by an equally stirring bed of gritty ambient loops with sudden stabs of noise and beats to create a chillingly nightmarish track. While Flicker of an Eye is but the second in a trilogy of EPs by THE DIELECTRIC, the tracks presented here not only display Hookens & co.'s ever present penchant for juxtaposing brief yet noisy moments of sonic experimentation with accessible rhythms befitting the modern industrial dance floor, but they stimulate the listener to await a full-length release as well. The only major downside to the EP is its length as each track stays in the three-to-four minute range, making for an unsatisfying trip, and offering barely crumbs in what could still promise to be a very delectable feast. However, if nothing else, THE DIELECTRIC's Flicker of an Eye is perhaps a reassuring indication of where Urbcom will be taking the underground in the years to come.

..Helmed by J. Hookens, whom was once mastermind behind JERICO ONE>, this moody EP stirs up memories of hypnotic electronic artists like Coil, Sleep Chamber, and The Klinik. Humming with a spectral chorus, “Introjection” eases one into their experimental slumber, as undulating wet textures and scattered percussive clicks help further this isolation tank impression. The automated tin stamp and sedate bass rumble in “Dimensions” proves rather animated in comparison, with some grave mesmerising utterances and occasional drill bit whirs furthering its bleak-meets-tense atmosphere.

Again, a disparity between rhythm and detached vocals resides in the dismal “Belief”, a stark corner which houses only a quirky computer twitter, a percolating snare hiccup, and the vaporous lilt of guest spectre Karen King. Finally, it is worth noting that “Flicker Of An eye” is the second part within a trilogy of EPs; though whether this excerpt is indicative of THE DIELECTRIC’s overall sound remains to be seen, it is nonetheless an interesting diversion into the realm of claustrophobic soundscaping.

..THE DIELECTRIC is a release of the British URBCOM label and they are known for the adventurous and qualitywise good electronic-industrial releases. The Dielectric is a follow-up to the Jerico One> project of J.Hookens and Flicker of an Eye is the second EP in the Rapid-Eye Assemblage trilogy of this project. With The Dielectric, Hookens works together with various artists from the music and art world. Thus we can find Berlin based Daniel Erhardt as member. In the by breakbeats dominated song ‘Belief’ female vocals can be heard from Karen King ( c / o Black Rain Records ).

In the ominous sounding ambient song ‘Re:location’ the Japanese cyberpunk writer Kenji Siratori is present with spoken word fragments. Musically The Dielectric concentrates on electro with cinematographic qualities. More experimental than Jerico One but rhythmically still quite accessible, like we can notice in the track ‘Dimensions’. Hookens voice adds a typical old school EBM dimension to the experimental-industrial sound. The best track is ‘Excursion’ with its pulsating beat and psychedelic electronic soundscape that reminds of the music of FSOL. As such this MCD consisting of five tracks gives a good impression of the sound of The Dielectric but is also somewhat on the short side. It does make curious to the coming album release of this English and German project. But first in 2009 we will see the release of the third part of the trilogy.

.. THE DIELECTRIC is the project and braincild of the former JERICO ONE frontman J. Hookens. Musically THE DIELECTRIC doesn’t break away a million miles with Hookens' previously discovered path only more moody and seductive, and his signature noise outbursts remains alive. This EP offers 5 rather abstract-minded Electro/Industrial ambient tunes, which all offer a quite hypnotic feeling thanks to a relative noise compositional effort. Varied in its rhythm programmings somewhere between 2-Step, Trip-Hop and IDM, the tracks are filled with dozens of FX manipulations and do not at all intend to satisfy a usual listening experience.

”Dimensions” can be named as the main track featuring a clear vocal performance and a rather calm sound outfit. The other tracks are turning more or less near to an IDM-related outfit, ”Re:location” for instance features the Japanese Cyberpunk-artist KENJI SIRATORI with a spoken-word guest performance. A quite interesting release by J. Hookens, but at least a bit too short with only 18+ minutes playing time. It's clear to recognize that the sound dimension of THE DIELECTRIC should be able to offer more stuff. Where’s an album?

..Jostling for our attention with their 'Rapid-Eye Assemblage 'music-art project. A three part trilogy unleased at the start of 2008 by this new UK,German based experimental electronic outfit. Formed at the end of 2006 by founder member J.Hookens ( Formerly of JERICO ONE>. The intresting thing about THE DIELECTRIC they not so much play instruments as paint vivid, visual pictures from their own collective consciousness to produce a complex, ambiguous blend of sophisticated industrial-convulsive instrumental, vocal electronica that is full of manic poise .

Volume two comes hot on the heels of the wonderful and intoxicating 'Rapid-Eye Assemblage Volume-1" released and deleted earler in 2008 via the bands own ( thedielectric.org website ). "Flicker Of An Eye " mixes experimental idm elements, together with distopian, nocturnal male/female vocals set behind an array of exciting dark atmospherics and rhythms . Making it hard not to get sucked in with the slo-mo reverb and the subversive electronic sounds they destroy to create . The final impression of The Dielectric on this 5-track digital-only ep is of a music collective of rare feeling and intelligence with a genuine sincerity to produce new experimental sounds that are adventurous, listenable and uncompromising .
